Pohela Boishakh-1420 | Bangla New Year-2013

Pohela Boishakh means first of Boishakh , Boishakh is first sessions   of Bangla calendar. It is also called Nobo Borsho. Nobo means new and Borsho means year; it is referred to Bengali New Year.


Pohela Boishakh is most one of the first festivals for the Bengalis, celebrate this occasions irrespective cast and creed together .It  is a original Bengali occasion where all Bengali communities forget their religious and regional differences and unify themselves under one word- “Bengali”

In Bangladesh ,every year this Occasions is celebrated 14th April according to the official Bangla calendar designed by the Bangla Academy and in India state of Assam, Jharkhand, Tripura, Odisha ,West Bengal and other Bangali communities in the world  are celebrated the Pohela Boishakh in mid-April according to South Asian calendar.


Bangla Nobo Borsho festivals are very closely joined with custom and rural life in Bengal nation. Usually Pohela Boishakh celebration starts early in the day.

People wake up and take shower early in the morning. They wear traditional dress such as young women mainly wear red border and diversify design white shari , flowers in hair ,tips and wear various  colorful churi (made by glass) and men wear traditional design and colorful  Panjabi with payjama(trouser) or kurta (tunic).


Every year CharuKala Institute of Dhaka University , one of the biggest attractions of Pohela Boishakh” Boishakhi Mongol Shobha Jatra” rallies holding various festoons and creations that signify the Bengali culture and all society people join these events.

A Large numbers of town people gather to Ramna Park early in the morning. Where Chhayanat Singers and Dancers perform in Ramna Botomul. Chhayanat singers start cultural program by famous Rabindranath song “Esho, he Boishakh, Esho Esho  ...“beginning the day.

In this Occasion Many people likes begin the day with the traditional Pohela Boishakh breakfast with fermented rice (rice soaked in water), fried hilsa fish, green chillies, onion, and dried fish (shutki).

Pohela Boishkhi fairs are held the whole country for at least a week.  Essential home accessories, toys (made by soil), various agricultural products, traditional handicrafts products, women accessories, as well as various kinds of delicious food and sweets are sold at these fairs.


Traditional jatra, gazir gan kobigan, gambhira gan, jarigan, bhatiali songs, pala gan and folk songs are staged in these fairs.

Rural area living people passing enjoyable moment by rural sports such as kite flying, bull racing, boat race, rope fighting, breaking the soil dish etc.

Bengalis biggest cultural festival  has alive about the last few centuries years  where all Bengalis together  keep his culture ignore  all painful history to make  colorful, bright and joyous Pohela Boishakh.
